The year 2018 was phenomenal and path-breaking to say the least for Tollywood. We saw a lot of movies that took us by surprise and stole our hearts, making it worthy of calling it the golden year for Tollywood.
Bringing back the first lady superstar of south Indian cinema couldn’t have been done better. Keerti Suresh perfectly fit the bill as Mahanati Savitri in this biopic. The multi starer got everything about making a biopic right, from the casting, different stages of a person’s life, the rise and fall of an actress, the lesser known personal life of the Mahanati, etc.
Sukumar’s films cannot be anything but the best, and he proved this yet again with Rangasthalam. It revolved around a man with hearing impairment, avenging the death of his brother. Set in a village backdrop, it did take all of us to the era of the 80s, perfectly depicting the tyrannical politics, caste system, and the cute-sweet village love story, all packaged into one.
This one was like an out of syllabus question in the Tollywood films, if you ask me. An outright awesome movie, backed by wonderful narration, and breathtaking filmmaking, this has to be the best Telugu film I’ve watched in recent times. Adivi sesh proved that you don’t need to be a star kid, have a big banner producing your film, or a famous director making the movie to succeed. All it takes is the right script and the right attitude to ace filmmaking.
Tollywood’s first ever space film, and trust me, that was several light years away from disappointment. From the performance of the actors, direction, to the VFX, it had everything point on! We can just hope that actors like Varun Tej carry the baton of sensible filmmaking even in the coming years and raise the bar for sensible cinema.
A crowd-sourced film. That’s the first thing I read about this movie before it’s release and that curious cat in me knew for sure that I’m going to watch this on the day of it’s release. The movie was worth every penny and the surprising fact that the movie featured a lot of villagers and not professional actors came as a surprise seeing their performance on screen.
These are a few brilliant movies from Tollywood in 2018 according to us. However, we do not say that these were the only films that were worth a mention. A few other noteworthy mentions would also be RX100, Awe, and U Turn.
While we were amazed at the movies that came our way in 2018, here’s a quick sneak peek into the upcoming movies of the year that might leave you awestruck!
NTR Mahanayakudu and Kathanayakudu– A two installment movie on the great actor and politician, Late. Mr. Sr. NTR.
Saaho – The much-awaited movie of Tollywood’s darling Prabhas. This is the first movie the actor signed up after a five-year break for the magnum opus Baahubali.
Sye Ra Narasimha Reddy– This movie has Megastar Chiranjeevi play a warrior and riding a horse- Enough said!
Yatra – This the season of biopics and we are not complaining. Yatra is the biopic of Late. Dr. Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy and features Malayalam superstar Mamotty in the lead role. Going by the trailer, this is going to be one movie that’s worth the wait.
Maharshi – Superstar Mahesh Babu looking like a million bucks in the first look was enough to have his fans across the world to swoon for this film. If someone’s unlocked the magic of reverse aging that’s him and that’s evident from the glimpses we’ve gotten of the star in Maharshi so far. I think that’s reason enough to add it to the list of the most awaited movies of this year.
If you have a favorite film from 2018 or a movie you’ve been looking forward to watching in 2019, that we missed out on, do mention it in the comments section, and before you go.
