Married to NTR at a very young age:
Basavatarakam was the daughter of NTR’s maternal uncle. She married him while the actor was barely 20.
Had her individual identity:
She was the wife of a star who was considered a demi-god, she was known to be a very private person when it comes to interacting with the media, but has always been someone people could reach out to, which earned her a set of admirers.
Instrumental in driving NTR’s acting career:
NTR was employed as a sub-registrar while he married Basavatarakam, but always cherished the dream of making it big in the world of films, it was she who convinced him to take the big leap and follow his dreams.
Harmonium was her favorite instrument:
Basavatarakam learned to play the harmonium and could play it like a pro.
She had 12 children:
Married to Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao for over 43 years, from 1942–1985, she had 12 children with the actor. While most of them tried their hand in the celluloid world, a few entered the political space. Nandamuri Saikrishna, Nandamuri Ramakrishna Sr., Pendyala Harikrishna, Nandamuri Harikrishna, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Daggubati Purandeswari, Nandamuri Jayakrishna, Nandamuri Mohanakrishna, Nara Bhuvaneshwari, Garapati Lokeswari, Jaya Shankar Krishna, and Kantamaneni Uma Maheswari’.
Scummed to cancer:
Basavatarakam scummed to cancer (malignant fibrous histiocytoma ) caused due to excessive radiation administered to her ovaries produce sterility. She breathed her last in 1985.
Indo-American Cancer Hospital was established in her memory:
After the demise of his wife, NTR established the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital in 1986, in Hyderabad, which is renowned for providing cancer treatment to the poor.
